The names of the authors nominated to the first edition of ‘The European Poet of Freedom’ Gdańsk Literary Award were officially announced during a press conference at the Warsaw International Book Fair on the 16th of May 2008.
In March, out of forty-six European countries seven were drawn to take part in this edition of the award: France, Cyprus, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Belarus. Poland is the eighth participant of every edition of the competition. Each country is represented by a book by one author chosen by the members of the Translator Team. The task of the team was to pick out the most interesting volumes of poetry published in print in 2006 or 2007.
